The crafted landscape

Orkney’s history isn't just a static display, it is an active physical process. this tour moves away from the observation deck and puts you inside the workshop. we focus on the continuity of craft by engaging with the materials: from the specific texture of neolithic clay to the Norse influence on silver and the functional engineering of the Orkney chair.
This tour is built for:
- active learners: those who prefer to understand a discipline by doing it.
- cultural enthusiasts: people who value the technical skill behind the object.
- collectors: guests looking for the story of the maker, not just the product.
Strictly 18+: due to the technical nature of the workshop access and the distillery tasting.monday to friday only: scheduled to align with active workshop hours when the real work happens.
Max group size: 4 people.
Physical intensity: low to moderate (active workshop participation).
Availability: weekdays only.
Route includes
- site access: Scapa crafts, Sheila fleet, Harray potter, and Highland park.
- base admissions: all standard tour fees and initial workshop sessions.
- private guide and transport: door to door service across the mainland.
- flexibility: designed to accommodate deep dive technical upgrades.
Typical itinerary
A focused look at orcadian production. the day is designed to be interactive, moving from observation to participation.
10:00am
Anywhere on the orkney mainland.
Scapa crafts | The Orkney chair
A 30 minute workshop session focusing on the functional design of the orkney chair. you will get close to the traditional carpentry and the specific straw work that defines this furniture. it is a study in how geography dictates material.
Sheila fleet workshop and the kirk gallery
A behind the scenes look at the industrial side of orcadian design. we examine the casting and enameling process to see how raw metal becomes a finished record of heritage. coffee at the kirk café follows, a gallery housed in a former church.
The Harray potter | neolithic continuity
No bus tours here. this is a one hour hands on session focusing on the physical properties of clay. you will work the material to see how prehistoric forms still influence modern orcadian pottery.
The upgrade: for those who want to complete the process, extend this to 2.5 hours to finish a piece and take home a physical record of your day.
Highland park distillery | The alchemy of peat
A one hour base tour and tasting at one of the few distilleries that still maintains its own traditional floor maltings. you will see, smell, and taste the intersection of agriculture, fire, and time.
The upgrade: for enthusiasts, several technical tasting packages are available at various price points.
5pm (ish)
Anywhere on Orkney mainland.
What this means for you
this is a structured exploration where you engage with the makers who prioritize the integrity of the object. by stepping into the workshops, you see the effort and the skill required to maintain these traditions.
the day is modular. the base tour provides a high level overview of four distinct disciplines. however, if you have a serious interest in ceramics or single malts, the day can be recalibrated. we can extend the time spent in the clay workshop or the tasting room to match your level of expertise.
because we visit working environments, this tour is restricted to weekdays only to ensure you see the makers in their element and can actually work with the materials.
items not included
- lunch
- shipping costs for finished pieces
- workshop or tasting upgrades
- bad moods
