Map of Showcase tour
Pickup

9:00am (ish)

Anywhere on Orkney mainland. Start time is flexible to suit you.

Sites may be reordered, substituted, or extended depending on timing, conditions, and your interests. Flexibility is always part of the experience.

Stop 1:

St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall

Orkney’s Norse heart. Built from local sandstone and shaped by earls and bishops, the cathedral anchors the story of power, faith, and identity in medieval Orkney and still defines Kirkwall today.

Stop 2:

Scapa Flow Viewpoints

Look out across one of the world’s great natural harbours and understand Orkney’s central role in both World Wars. From here the scale of global events and their local impact becomes clear.

Stop 3:

Unstan Chambered Tomb

A quieter Neolithic cairn where early Orcadian life, belief, and burial practice begin to feel personal rather than distant. Often a moment where prehistory becomes real.

Stop 4:

Yesnaby Cliffs

Open Atlantic coastline shaped by geology and weather. Sea stacks, seabirds, and horizon provide space to understand how landscape influences settlement and survival in the islands.

Stop 5:

Skara Brae

One of the best preserved Neolithic villages in Europe. Seen with context and careful timing, it becomes more than a famous site and begins to feel like a lived settlement. Entry and timing discussed in advance.

Lunch:

13:00(ish)

A relaxed pause is built into the day, often at the Orkney Brewery or a similar location suited to the route and your preferences. Time to reset without breaking the flow of the experience.

Stop 6:

Ring of Brodgar & Stones of Stenness Peninsula

Ceremonial landscapes at the centre of prehistoric Orkney. These monuments are explored as part of a wider ritual landscape, allowing their scale and purpose to become clear.

Maeshowe. A Grassy mound with a gated entrance at its base and a vivid rainbow arching over a distant hill in the background.
Stop 7:

Maeshowe Chambered Cairn

The star attraction of the day. A remarkable Neolithic chamber aligned to the winter solstice and later entered by Vikings who left their mark in runic graffiti. Entry is discussed and arranged in advance where possible.

Drop off:

4pm (ish)

Anywhere on Orkney mainland.

What to expect from this tour

A full-day private Orkney tour led by a born-and-raised Orcadian guide, designed for travellers who want the most complete understanding possible in one day. Showcase allows time to slow down where it matters. Sites are not rushed and connections are explored properly.

By the end of the day, guests leave not only having seen Orkney’s most important places, but feeling connected to the story behind them and often still thinking about what these islands reveal long after they have gone.

Routing is intelligent and paced to avoid fatigue. The story unfolds across landscape, archaeology, and lived culture rather than being delivered as isolated facts. You see the major sites, but more importantly, you understand how they relate to one another and why they still matter.

This is not a checklist tour. It is a complete narrative experience shaped around your interests, the conditions, and the rhythm of the day.

Not included

  • Lunch or refreshments
  • Personal expenses

Flexibility & Tour Enhancements

This Orkney tour is intentionally adaptable to suit your interest and pace:

  • Spend longer at certain sites
  • Add quieter or lesser-known locations
  • Extend the tour by hours or days
  • Adjust the balance between historic periods

When’s the best time to visit Orkney for decent weather and fewer crowds?

April, May, October, and November are ideal - fewer crowds, a more relaxed atmosphere, and (hopefully) some decent weather. Just pack a jacket… We are north of northern Scotland, after all.

Can I alter a suggested itinerary to add or remove a site or experience?

Certainly! Just give me a heads up to ensure it is both safe and practical to do so within our time.

Can you accommodate groups larger than 4?

Possibly! It depends on the timing and availability of my extended team. Let’s chat.

Can you accommodate four larger adults comfortably?

Compared to some U.S. vehicles yes. Our roads are narrow, and our parking is even narrower. But I use the largest, most comfortable vehicles I can source.

If physical space is a concern, I usually recommend a group size of three for maximum comfort.
