Foundations and power.

Foundations and power.
Two guided days exploring the landscapes that shaped Norse authority in the north. Neolithic ceremonial sites, Norse centres, coastal strongholds, and working harbours are approached as part of one continuous system rather than separate historical chapters.

Day 2

Orkney part 2/2

Orkney:

Movement across the North

Travel between island groups forms part of the narrative. Sea distance, exposure, and geography explain how Orkney and Shetland functioned together within a wider Norse world.

Day 3

Travel to Shetland

Shetland:

 Edge and exchange

A full guided day in Shetland examining settlement, maritime life, and survival at the outer edge of the North Atlantic. Earlier archaeology and Norse presence are understood within the realities of climate, trade, and political reach.

Day 3

What to expect from this tour

A fully private, multi-day guided journey designed for travellers who want depth rather than speed. This is not a fixed itinerary product. It is a carefully coordinated expedition shaped around real conditions in the northern isles.

Orkney and Shetland are approached as one connected world. Neolithic monuments, Norse centres, coastal routes, and modern communities are explored as part of a continuous story shaped by sea, weather, and time.

Pacing is deliberate. Distances are realistic. Space is left for weather shifts, light, conversation, and moments that cannot be scheduled but often become the most memorable.

This expedition is best suited to serious travellers who value understanding over simple sightseeing.

There is no fixed route. Two guided days are spent in Orkney and one in Shetland, shaped around ferry timetables, weather, and light. Structure is built carefully so the experience feels coherent and deliberate rather than hurried.

By the end of the journey, guests understand how these northern islands interlinked and leave with a depth of history and memory that extends far beyond a typical tour.

About your guide

Hi, I’m Calum.

The Norse Legacy Expedition is designed as a deeper journey rather than a tour. Across multiple days, we trace Orkney’s Norse world through landscape, settlement, and story in a way that cannot be compressed into a single visit. It is the most complete experience I offer and the one that will continue to evolve as my own long-term study deepens.

If you are looking for the fullest expression of these islands’ history, this is where we begin.

Your questions answered

What about site tickets

All tickets are included in the price for guided tours.

Do you charge per person?

Nope! All of my tours are priced per group. So bring your friends, family, or favourite travel companions the price stays the same.

When’s the best time to visit Orkney for decent weather and fewer crowds?

April, May, October, and November are ideal - fewer crowds, a more relaxed atmosphere, and (hopefully) some decent weather. Just pack a jacket… We are north of northern Scotland, after all.

Can I alter a suggested itinerary to add or remove a site or experience?

Certainly! Just give me a heads up to ensure it is both safe and practical to do so within our time.

Can you accommodate groups larger than 4?

Possibly! It depends on the timing and availability of my extended team. Let’s chat.

Can you accommodate four larger adults comfortably?

Compared to some U.S. vehicles yes. Our roads are narrow, and our parking is even narrower. But I use the largest, most comfortable vehicles I can source.

If physical space is a concern, I usually recommend a group size of three for maximum comfort.
