The Norse Legacy Expedition

This is a cross-archipelago study of the North Atlantic power corridor. While many travellers visit Orkney and Shetland as separate destinations, this expedition reveals the physical and political connections that unified them for centuries.
Using the Orkneyinga Saga as a living map, we explore a world where power, belief, and trade moved constantly across the North Atlantic, layered over much older Neolithic and Iron Age landscapes. This is a journey through a connected system, managed with the depth and intentional pacing that these islands require.

Arrival and Orientation
This expedition operates on a limited weekly schedule to align with inter-island travel. Start days are typically Monday or Wednesday, allowing the journey to flow naturally through Orkney and onward to Shetland.
9:00am (ish)
Anywhere on the Orkney mainland. Start time is flexible. We can begin as late as 2:00pm if you prefer an afternoon and evening focus.

Foundations and power.
The Norse earldom did not emerge in isolation. We begin within the ceremonial and coastal landscapes that shaped authority in the north. Neolithic sites, Norse centres, coastal strongholds, and working harbours are approached as one continuous system rather than separate historical chapters.

Movement across the North
Territory, sea routes, and strategic geography are examined across the Mainland and surrounding coast. The landscape itself explains how Orkney functioned within a wider Norse Atlantic network.

Travel to Shetland
Overnight ferry to Shetland. The sea journey forms part of the narrative, reinforcing the distances and exposure that shaped life in the North Atlantic.

Explore Shetland

Edge and exchange
A full guided day examining settlement, maritime life, and survival at the outer edge of Norse expansion. Earlier archaeology and later Norse presence are understood within the realities of climate, trade, and political reach.
5pm (ish)
Drop off on the Shetland mainland. You may fly from Sumburgh, extend your stay, or arrange onward travel independently. Expeditions typically conclude in Shetland on Wednesdays or Fridays..

What to expect from your Norse Legacy Expedition
The Norse Legacy Expedition provides the narrative depth required to bridge two archipelagos. This is the only multi-day project designed to link the power centres of Orkney and Shetland through the lens of the Orkneyinga Saga. We move beyond isolated sites to examine the North Atlantic as one continuous, functioning system.
A strategic, cross-archipelago itinerary
Time is used deliberately to manage the scale of the landscape. You will leave with a clear mental map of how these islands operated as a unified Atlantic power. From the Neolithic foundations to the Norse frontier, we ensure the mechanics of the history are understood, not just seen.
The specialist advantage
Managing two island groups and maritime logistics requires professional integrity and an adaptive approach. Whether we are adjusting for the northern light or pivoting to a specific archival interest, I avoid rigid, "coach-style" routes. The focus is on providing a technical, unhurried experience that is yours to shape as it unfolds.
A lasting perspective
This expedition is not a standard circuit. By the end of the journey, you will understand how these northern islands functioned together as a unified power. You leave with a depth of perspective and a mental map of the North Atlantic that remains long after the expedition concludes.
Items not included
- Return travel from Shetland: We can coordinate this as an additional service.
- Meals and refreshments
- Accommodation: We can manage these bookings for you as an additional service.

- Variable pacing: Adjusted across islands to suit the group.
- Extended durations: Additional days can be added.
- Technical focus: Greater emphasis on specific periods can be integrated.

Your questions answered
What about site tickets
All tickets are included in the price for guided tours.
Do you charge per person?
Nope! All of my tours are priced per group. So bring your friends, family, or favourite travel companions the price stays the same.
When’s the best time to visit Orkney for decent weather and fewer crowds?
April, May, October, and November are ideal - fewer crowds, a more relaxed atmosphere, and (hopefully) some decent weather. Just pack a jacket… We are north of northern Scotland, after all.
Can I alter a suggested itinerary to add or remove a site or experience?
Certainly! Just give me a heads up to ensure it is both safe and practical to do so within our time.
Can you accommodate groups larger than 4?
Possibly! It depends on the timing and availability of my extended team. Let’s chat.
Can you accommodate four larger adults comfortably?
Compared to some U.S. vehicles yes. Our roads are narrow, and our parking is even narrower. But I use the largest, most comfortable vehicles I can source.
If physical space is a concern, I usually recommend a group size of three for maximum comfort.
