This is a cross archipelago study of the North Atlantic power corridor. While many travellers visit Orkney and Shetland as separate destinations, this expedition reveals the physical and political connections that unified them for centuries. Using the Orkneyinga Saga as a living map, we explore a world where power, belief and trade moved constantly across the North Atlantic, layered over much older Neolithic and Iron Age landscapes. This is a journey through a connected system.

 This tour is built for:

  • Guests staying in Orkney: For those already on the island.
  • Kirkwall Airport arrivals: Direct transport from your flight.

Max group size: 4 people

Physical intensity: Low

Suitability: All ages

Route Includes:

  • All scheduled historical sites in Orkney and Shetland.
  • Private guide
  • Private transport
  • Ferry logistics: Full management of maritime travel across both archipelagos.
  • Consultation: Extensive expedition planning and route feasibility.

Expedition Mapping:

Every journey is built individually. The route is not a fixed circuit, but an adaptive response to your interests, the weather, and the most effective logistical outcome for the experience.

Day 1

Arrival and orientation

This expedition operates on a limited weekly schedule to align with inter island travel. Start days are typically Monday or Wednesday, allowing the journey to flow naturally through Orkney and onward to Shetland.

Pickup

9:00am (ish)

Anywhere on the Orkney mainland. Start time is flexible. We can begin as late as 2:00pm if you prefer an afternoon and evening focus.

Orkney

Foundations and power.

The Norse earldom did not emerge in isolation. We begin within the ceremonial and coastal landscapes that shaped authority in the north. Neolithic sites, Norse centres, coastal strongholds, and working harbours are approached as one continuous system rather than separate historical chapters.

Day 2

Orkney continued...

Orkney:

Movement across the north

Territory, sea routes, and strategic geography are examined across the Mainland and surrounding coast. The landscape itself explains how Orkney functioned within a wider Norse Atlantic network.

Day 2 evening

Travel to Shetland

Overnight ferry to Shetland. The sea journey forms part of the narrative, reinforcing the distances and exposure that shaped life in the North Atlantic.

Day 3

Explore Shetland

Shetland:

 Edge and exchange

A full guided day examining settlement, maritime life, and survival at the outer edge of Norse expansion. Earlier archaeology and later Norse presence are understood within the realities of climate, trade, and political reach.

tour end:

5pm (ish)

Drop off on the Shetland mainland. You may fly from Sumburgh, extend your stay, or arrange onward travel independently. Expeditions typically conclude in Shetland on Wednesdays or Fridays..

What this means for you

This is my most advanced project, and the most complete way I can show the northern islands in a tour. The Norse Legacy Expedition allows the full story to extend beyond a single archipelago. Over multiple days, we connect Orkney and Shetland through the lens of the Orkneyinga Saga, moving through a landscape where power, belief, and trade operated as one continuous North Atlantic system.

A key part of this is understanding the relationship between the islands, not just visiting them. Sites, coastlines, and sea routes begin to connect into a working picture of how this region functioned over centuries.

With the additional time available, the journey moves at a adapted pace. We adjust for weather, light, and logistics across both island groups, allowing the experience to unfold properly without being forced into a fixed route.

This is a specialist expedition managing two archipelagos, ferry systems, and shifting conditions requires a technical approach and careful coordination throughout. Like all Historic Orkney journeys, it remains private and flexible. The structure is shaped in advance and refined in real time, depending on your interests and the conditions on the ground.

By the end of the expedition, you leave with a clear mental map of how these islands functioned together and a perspective that stays with you long after the journey is complete.

Important note

This is a multi-day tour and expedition operating across Orkney and Shetland islands, so timing is shaped around ferry schedules, weather windows, and access requirements. The route is not fixed. Each journey is built individually around you to ensure the most effective and realistic outcome on the ground.

Items not included

  • Return travel from Shetland: We can coordinate this as an additional service.
  • Meals and refreshments

Hi, I’m Calum.

I have lived and worked between Orkney and Shetland my entire life. I understand the flow of these islands not just as destinations, but as a single, connected landscape. This expedition is clear, grounded, and professionally managed.

Your questions answered

What about site tickets

All tickets are included in the price for guided tours.

Do you charge per person?

Nope! All of my tours are priced per group. So bring your friends, family, or favourite travel companions the price stays the same.

When’s the best time to visit Orkney for decent weather and fewer crowds?

April, May, October, and November are ideal - fewer crowds, a more relaxed atmosphere, and (hopefully) some decent weather. Just pack a jacket… We are north of northern Scotland, after all.

Can I alter a suggested itinerary to add or remove a site or experience?

Certainly! Just give me a heads up to ensure it is both safe and practical to do so within our time.

Can you accommodate groups larger than 4?

Possibly! It depends on the timing and availability of my extended team. Let’s chat.

Can you accommodate four larger adults comfortably?

Compared to some U.S. vehicles yes. Our roads are narrow, and our parking is even narrower. But I use the largest, most comfortable vehicles I can source.

If physical space is a concern, I usually recommend a group size of three for maximum comfort.
