Meet your guide

So, if you have made it here, you are likely wondering if you can spend a week in the wilds of Orkney or a Caledonian forest with me. It is a fair question. My website is a direct extension of how I operate. You won’t find flashy sales copy here because that is not who I am. I grew up in the shadow of the Orkney UNESCO world heritage site before it was one, before the tour buses and algorithms rolled in. I am proud to be part of the islands and share its history in my own distinct way.
The Craft
I have spent my lifetime in the Orkney Islands. My guiding philosophy is similar to that on the mat, the cliffs, and the road: you show up, do it, do it a lot and someday you master it. I walked away from the standard guiding circuit because I had no interest in herding people like livestock. I look at these sites and see the human sweat it took to build them and the story behind them—an outlook forged within my time in the British Army and specifically the Physical Training Corps. I am here to make sure these islands are kept in one piece so the next generation actually has something worth inheriting.
I started my guiding career covering the STGA syllabus and quickly realised much of it is directly replaceable with AI now. Though a good foundation, nothing beats decades of time on the ground and my own endless pursuit of Orkney history that is much, much harder to find. The depth of millenia found here will most likely never be fully understood.
Professors have argued over this place for hundreds of years and that is most likely not going to change tomorrow.
Adaptability & Logistics
My core ability is logistics and flexibility. I am from the last generation that learned to navigate the world without a smartphone, which is why I spend as little time behind a screen as humanly possible, energetic enough to keep the kids amused on a poor day, but sharp enough to debate Neolithic engineering with a retired litigator over a dram and any thing in between. I call it adaptive guiding.
The Reality
I don't try to be everything to everyone because I understand it is simply not possible to do; I don’t just offer generic sightseeing, and promote understanding of both the past and present well beyond the guidebook if required. Before we commit, feel free to come on the live call to ensure I can deliver exactly what you need—if I can’t, I will tell you.
When the boots come off, I am a father dealing with the daily chaos at home. I take Sundays off because that day belongs to the judo mat and whatever else has piled up!
Building this website was both a fun challenge and one of the most difficult tasks I have ever undertaken digitally; this page specifically was the hardest of all to write because it is hard to talk about yourself without sounding like a salesman. Most travel sites and tour agencies look interchangeable, but I chose to build this one to be the exact opposite.
I do things differently, and I like it that way.
