Meet your guide: Authentic expertise and local connection

An inherited understanding of the islands

I began guiding with a single intention: to provide an authentic representation of the Orkney Islands. As Orkney’s international reputation grows, the responsibility to present our heritage properly deepens. True understanding of this landscape requires depth, clarity, and a lived perspective. These are qualities recognised instinctively by those raised within these communities.

A lifetime rooted in the landscape

Orkney has never been a mere backdrop to my life. It is the constant within it. With generations of connection to the land and community, I view the islands through a lens of continuity.

I first encountered many of our ancient Neolithic sites as a child, long before modern walkways and interpretation panels existed. Witnessing these monuments in their raw state left a lasting impression that continues to inform my work as a private guide.

A disciplined approach to Orkney’s history

I study these islands daily. This is not done casually but through deliberate archaeological research, archival Norse sources, and continual field exploration.

  • Continuous learning. Understanding Orkney is a lifelong discipline, not a finished task.
  • Expert interpretation. My knowledge is grounded in how perceptions of our history shift over time, ensuring your tour is informed by the latest discoveries and historical context.
  • Professional foundation. While formal training provided my professional foundation, a lifetime of immersion shaped my expertise.

My guiding philosophy: Depth and pacing

My guiding style weaves together landscape reading, community memory, and the present moment. In Orkney, the past and present overlap. My role is to help you navigate both.

  • Bespoke experiences. No two tours are identical. Whether you seek intellectual depth or the atmosphere of the landscape, the experience is tailored to your interests.
  • One tour per day. I lead only one private group per day. This ensures every visit is meticulously prepared, unhurried, and flexible.
  • Millennial perspective. My aim is to help you understand how these islands connect across millennia, from the Stone Age to the modern community.

This saga is ongoing and integrated. It is not separate from my life here, nor from the next generation who will carry these stories forward. The best way to understand the depth of these islands is to walk them together.
