Sites may be reordered, substituted, or extended depending on timing, conditions, and your interests. Flexibility is always part of the experience.

Stop 1:

Italian Chapel & Churchill Barriers

TICKETS INCLUDED. A moving Second World War story of creativity, faith, and resilience set within the wider naval landscape of Scapa Flow. The barriers themselves reveal how conflict reshaped Orkney’s geography and daily life.

Stop 2:

Scapa Flow Viewpoints

Look out across one of the most strategically important naval anchorages in modern history. Here the scale of both World Wars becomes clear, and Orkney’s quiet but central global role comes into focus.

Stop 3:

Unstan Chambered Tomb

A quieter Neolithic chambered cairn offering insight into early Orcadian burial practice and community life. This is often where the human side of prehistoric Orkney becomes easiest to grasp.

Stop 4:

Yesnaby Cliffs

Atlantic cliffs shaped by geology, weather, and time. Sea stacks, seabirds, and open horizon provide space to understand how landscape influences settlement, belief, and survival.

Stop 5:

Skara Brae

A remarkably preserved Neolithic village revealed by storm and protected by sand. Approached with context rather than crowds, it becomes a lived place rather than simply an archaeological site. Timing and entry are discussed in advance.

Break:

13:00(ish)

Short break for lunch or refreshments.

Rings of Brodgar. Ancient standing stones on grassy land with a vibrant sunset sky filled with orange and purple clouds.
Stop 6:

Ring of Brodgar & Stones of Stenness Peninsula

Ceremonial landscapes at the heart of prehistoric Orkney. These monuments are explored as part of a wider ritual landscape rather than isolated sites, allowing their scale and purpose to make sense.

Drop off:

2pm (ish)

Anywhere on Orkney mainland.

What to expect from this tour

A private, intelligently paced Orkney guided tour led by a born-and-raised Orcadian guide. Rather than focusing on a single period, Odyssey connects multiple layers of Orkney’s past into one coherent narrative. Neolithic monuments, Norse influence, wartime history, and modern island life are understood together rather than in isolation.

Routing is efficient, transitions are smooth, and time is used deliberately so the day feels purposeful rather than hurried. You see widely, but more importantly, you understand what you are seeing and why it matters.

This is not box-ticking. It is range with meaning. The tour remains flexible and responsive to weather, site access, and your interests on the day, ensuring your time in Orkney is used well.

You leave with a clear mental map of Orkney. Not a blur of stops, but a grounded understanding of how these islands fit together historically, culturally, and geographically. This is depth without heaviness, range without rush, and context that stays with you long after the day ends.

Not included

  • Lunch or refreshments
  • Personal expenses

Flexibility & Tour Enhancements

This Orkney tour is intentionally adaptable to suit your interest and pace:

  • Spend longer at certain sites
  • Add quieter or lesser-known locations
  • Extend the tour by hours or days
  • Adjust the balance between historic periods
About your guide

Hi, I’m Calum.

I was born in Orkney. I understand how these sites relate to each other, not just individually, but as part of a much larger story.

People love this Odyssey private tour of Orkney because it is clear, grounded, and adaptable. I explain what matters, why it matters, and how it connects, without rehearsed scripts or theatrics.

I take only one tour per day. That means the itinerary can stretch, compress, or change direction if something deserves more time.

When’s the best time to visit Orkney for decent weather and fewer crowds?

April, May, October, and November are ideal - fewer crowds, a more relaxed atmosphere, and (hopefully) some decent weather. Just pack a jacket… We are north of northern Scotland, after all.

Can I alter a suggested itinerary to add or remove a site or experience?

Certainly! Just give me a heads up to ensure it is both safe and practical to do so within our time.

Can you accommodate groups larger than 4?

Possibly! It depends on the timing and availability of my extended team. Let’s chat.

Can you accommodate four larger adults comfortably?

Compared to some U.S. vehicles yes. Our roads are narrow, and our parking is even narrower. But I use the largest, most comfortable vehicles I can source.

If physical space is a concern, I usually recommend a group size of three for maximum comfort.
