Odyssey tour

The original Odyssey. Crafted for those with limited time or those looking for a light island introduction. This route has been tried and tested over the years and consistently delivers, while remaining fully customisable within reason. Typical itinerary
Here is an example of a route that works well. The map shows the typical flow of the day, but flexibility is part of the design.

From 9:00am onward
Anywhere on the Orkney Mainland. Start times are completely flexible around you between 9:00am and 2:00pm, allowing for either a morning or afternoon start.

Italian Chapel & Churchill Barriers
A WWII story of creativity and resilience in the Scapa Flow naval landscape. We’ll look at how conflict physically reshaped Orkney’s geography and daily life, uncovering the hidden details behind the craftsmanship.

Scapa Flow Viewpoints
Perspective on a strategic naval anchorage that defined modern history. I’ll give you the context of how both World Wars placed this quiet archipelago at the very center of the global stage.

Unstan Chambered Tomb
An intimate Neolithic encounter. We’ll step inside together to grasp the human side of prehistoric burial and community life—well away from the standard tour bus crowds. One of my favourites.

Yesnaby Cliffs
Elemental, Atlantic scale. We’ll walk the coastline to see how geology and brutal North Sea weather dictated exactly where people lived, shaped by the open horizon.

Skara Brae
A UNESCO World Heritage site older than the Pyramids and preserved in a sand-dune "time capsule" for millennia. I will guide you through the layout of this stone-age village on-site, providing the vital context that signs and audio-guides miss.

Around 1:00pm (ish)
A pause for local food, coffee, or an ale. A chance to reset, sit down, and discuss the morning's sites before we head into the ceremonial heart of the island.

Ring of Brodgar & Stones of Stenness Peninsula
The ceremonial heart of prehistoric Orkney. We explore these monuments together as a single, connected ritual landscape, allowing their true scale and purpose to actually make sense.
Around five hours after pickup
Return anywhere on the Orkney Mainland.
What this means for you
This tour is built entirely around you. We can follow the itinerary exactly as described, or pivot on the fly to suit your specific interests. That’s the real advantage of a fully guided private tour—no strangers in the car, no rigid bus schedules, and zero compromises.
Whether you want a deep Neolithic focus, a detour along a whisky trail, or a quick side mission to find puffins (we call them Tammy Norries), the day adapts to your pace.
- Island time: The itinerary is roughly 5 hours, but I value the spirit of the islands over a stopwatch. We travel at a relaxed pace that always works out in my clients' favour.
- Guaranteed return: I closely monitor the clock to ensure you are back well in time for flights, ferries, and cruise departures—unless you decide to get lost at the bar.
- Beyond the Odyssey: If you want to push further, I offer multi-day tours to the outer islands for deeper exploration, linking your journey seamlessly across the archipelago and the Highlands.
Items not included:
- Lunch
- Personal expenses
- Bad moods

Hi, I’m Calum.
The Odyssey is a sharp introduction, but five hours only scratches the surface of Orkney. It gives you the baseline context you need so you actually understand what you are looking at, while leaving us enough flexibility to pivot when the weather or the crowds demand it.

More Historic Orkney Private Tours
Let's explore Orkney together. Tours from 5hrs, to multi-day adventures.

Our flagship Orkney experience. We weave the threads of Neolithic, Norse, and wartime narratives into one timeline. Delivered with unhurried pacing, Maeshowe, and Skara Brae.

The Ancient Scotland Discovery
Leave the crowded coach tours behind. This four-day private expedition tracks a prehistoric blueprint from the mainland glens to the raw, monumental stone circles of the Orkney islands.
Your questions answered
What about site tickets
All tickets are included in the price for guided tours.
Do you charge per person?
Nope! All of my tours are priced per group. So bring your friends, family, or favourite travel companions the price stays the same.
When’s the best time to visit Orkney for decent weather and fewer crowds?
April, May, October, and November are ideal - fewer crowds, a more relaxed atmosphere, and (hopefully) some decent weather. Just pack a jacket… We are north of northern Scotland, after all.
Can I alter a suggested itinerary to add or remove a site or experience?
Certainly! Just give me a heads up to ensure it is both safe and practical to do so within our time.
Can you accommodate groups larger than 4?
Possibly! It depends on the timing and availability of my extended team. Let’s chat.
Can you accommodate four larger adults comfortably?
Compared to some U.S. vehicles yes. Our roads are narrow, and our parking is even narrower. But I use the largest, most comfortable vehicles I can source.
If physical space is a concern, I usually recommend a group size of three for maximum comfort.
