About Historic Orkney

Professional private guiding: A deliberate approach.

Historic Orkney provides a high-specification, independent touring and expedition service for the Orkney Islands and wider Scotland. Built on honesty and environmental respect, our operation delivers absolute reliability and professional discipline for clients who want to go beyond the surface.

Professional reliability

  • 0% Cancellation Record: Over the last 12 months, we have maintained a 0% cancellation rate across every direct service. We manage logistics to eliminate uncertainty for international travellers. When you book, we are committed to you.

  • Closed-Diary Commitment: We accept only one private booking per day. A booking means a strict 24-hour closed diary. There is zero shoehorning of other clients, split shifts, or rushed turnarounds. This unhurried approach protects the dedicated time, focus, and flexibility allocated to your journey. You never need to hurry, but we always meet your required deadlines.

  • Our Approach: Historic Orkney exists as a deliberate commitment to the islands, prioritising landscape integrity over volume. Operating as a dedicated specialist managing one group per day, our wider network is supported by an extensive provider base equipped to handle complex requests. Clear operations, with zero lightly-worn marketing labels.

  • Transparent Pricing: All rates are project-based and published openly. We do not use hidden fees or arbitrary surcharges.

Technical integrity & safety

  • The Fleet: Our vehicles undergo professional safety inspections every four months. We use modern, high-specification platforms maintained for operational consistency in the northern environment. Our fleet spans practical MPVs, executive class BMW 5 Series, and for 2027 the BMW 7 Series addition.

We do not use shared group panel vans or mass-market coaches.

  • Accreditation & Verification: Professional membership of SITOA (Scottish Independent Tour Operators Association). Externally verified for providing tours in Scotland and fully insured for all statutory requirements across Scotland and Europe.

  • Port Access: We hold the necessary Orkney port permits to ensure safe, legal dockside collection and drop-off for cruise ship clients.

  • Security: Full enhanced PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) background check certification issued by the Scottish Government.

Tools of the trade

  • Aerial Analysis: Drone technology is sometimes utilised for site clarity and to provide historical perspectives unavailable from ground level. This is conducted strictly where non-invasive to wildlife.

  • Marine Access: Operational capability for the North Isles and Scapa Flow using vessels suited for the maritime environment.

  • Sustainable Travel: Our vehicles meet or exceed the current Euro 6 emissions standards for ULEZ compliance. Respecting both your space and the landscape.

  • Vetted Affiliations: We maintain a curated network of trusted local partners and island specialists for services outside our core services.

Land management & responsibility

We prioritise real-world action over labels.

  • Respect for the Land: We strictly follow "Leave No Trace" principles. Our operations respect the integrity of the archaeological sites and the local landowners who grant access.

  • Respect for Wildlife: We share space with the environment rather than disturbing it. We do not run intrusive wildlife chasing or whale watching tours.

  • Carbon Offset: Active, long-standing natural land sequestration and tree planting. Nature manages carbon better than a spreadsheet.

  • Community Support: Direct financial contributions and active, decades-long personal involvement with local animal rescue and Orkney community organisations.

The Decision

We lead a disciplined, low-volume operation. Historic Orkney provides the technical expertise and logistical certainty required for an exeptional experience. The objective is a seamless, unhurried encounter with the landscape, without rush or compromise.
