Clients of mine hire me for many reasons, but my end goal is always the same: to exceed expectations and put together a trip that stays with you long after you have left. Orkney has a certain energy about it that is impossible to explain, as it is entirely possible it will never be fully understood.

What drives me is an authentic passion to bring a client vision to life, seamlessly integrating tourism with cultural insight and stress-free slow travel. I gravitate toward the weird and wonderful places, from hidden Pictish stone museums to sites steeped in local legend, far off the beaten track where the crowds never go. While my role here in Orkney is as a specialist site guide, I operate as your private driver and host across all of Scotland. I keep out of cities. Honestly, I feel entirely out of place in an urban setting; give me the open road and the ancient landscape every single time.

Ask my family, and they will tell you I am just the fun guy who refuses to take himself too seriously, right up until the moment it counts. Out here, my standards are everything. Forged in the British Army, specifically the Physical Training Corps, and a lifetime spent across the Orkney islands, I have never left Orkney for more than 21 consecutive days. I cannot truthfully remember the last time I lost my cool, regardless of the scenario. When the boots come off, I am navigating the daily chaos of parenthood, which is why Sundays belong strictly to the family and the island judo club.

My roots here are in Orkney—with family going back to the Napoleonic wars—and it is not just a backdrop for my career. Island life is a world away from the hustle and bustle. Here, we operate on island time, a slower, deeper rhythm that I can teach you. Representing this incredible community and its people as a private local guide is an absolute honour, and I carry that pride into every single service I offer.

I have a personal respect for flawless engineering. I built this business from the ground up with an immaculate fleet because quality matters in any field, and when it comes to long-distance touring across all of Scotland, nothing beats a BMW. Whether it is the absolute precision of a 5,000-year-old Neolithic tomb or a perfectly built vehicle designed for the open road, I appreciate things built to last and operate exactly as intended. It simply would not fit the profile for me to drive an airport shuttle bus.

When it comes to the past, forget the dry textbooks. My passion for ancient history goes far beyond the standard guidebook, delivering private Orkney archaeological and heritage tours year-round tailored completely to you. Whether I am keeping kids entertained through a stormy day or debating prehistoric architecture with a retired litigator, every trip can be built from scratch. My style did not come from the traditional tourism mould. It is diverse and shaped by unique experiences outside of the industry, which means I can adapt to any terrain or focus. I started out covering the standard STGA syllabus, but quickly realised its real-world application was largely restricted to basic bus tours. I walked away from that circuit, put in my thousand hours on the ground, and evolved to create my own unique, adaptive private guiding style, even training new guides right here in Orkney.

I operate with an authentic Scandinavian style of quiet confidence. I keep group sizes intentionally small to protect the future of the places we explore. No generic templates, no corporate fluff, just an authentic experience delivered the way only an islander can.

True connection to landscapes and truly ancient places does not scale. Because I personally lead every single expedition and keep groups fiercely limited, my calendar fills fast.
