Planning an island trip should be exciting, not a logistical headache. Built entirely on feedback from independent travellers, this service is a relaxed, live gut-check to make sure your holiday ideas actually work on the ground. I don't write itineraries or build rigid schedules—this is purely about providing honest local advice and trusted recommendations. Whether you have a rough outline or are feeling a bit stuck with conflicting advice online, I am completely happy to help you piece it together. Having the time to look at your concepts properly and talk them through live makes all the difference, cutting right through the internet noise to shape a trip that fits the actual rhythm of the islands before you lock in your ferries or flights.

Great for:

  • Independent explorers: If you are managing your own car rentals and bookings but want to ensure your route ideas make sense without any stressful backtracking.
  • Ferry & travel synchronization: Anyone trying to weave mainland Scotland travel naturally into complex island ferry and flight timetables.
  • First-timers & the unsure: If you are feeling a bit stuck, overwhelmed by options, or just want a reassuring nod from someone on the ground.
  • Deep dives & ancestral roots: Visitors looking for specific local intelligence on family archives, old parish locations, or quieter, off-the-beaten-path archaeology.

How we do it

  • The Brief: You share your current wishlist, questions, or the main roadblocks you are trying to untangle.
  • The Live Conversation: A focused, 30-minute live call. This is where we look at your ideas properly, talk it through together, and figure out the tricky bits in real time.
  • The Recommendations: After our call, I wrap up the advice, insider tips, and ferry considerations we discussed. You'll get a clear, practical summary of recommendations sent straight to your email so you can finalize your own days with total confidence.

What We’ll Cover Together

Instead of guessing your way through outdated travel forums, we will get your ideas completely sorted using real-time local knowledge:

  • Why a live conversation matters: A lifetime of living and working here gives me a layer of foresight you won't find on travel blogs or forums. Sitting down to talk through your ideas in real time allows us to solve tricky bottlenecks instantly, delivering clear local context without any rigid scripts or sponsored pitches.
  • Sensible Advice: Looking at your route concepts to make sure you spend your time out in the landscape, not stuck behind the wheel repeating the same roads.
  • Your Custom Focus: Shaping our talk entirely around what makes you tick, whether that’s Neolithic stone circles, wartime maritime history, or coastal wildlife trails.
  • Beating the Crowds: Learning the quietest, best windows to visit major sites like Skara Brae or Maeshowe so you can avoid the big coach tours.
  • Genuine Local Spots: Unbiased recommendations for great places to stay, eat, and grab a drink that match your style.
  • Island Weather Realities: Practical tips on coastal walking safety, exposure, and how to keep your ideas flexible enough to work with the Atlantic weather.

Booking Conditions & Transparency

Payment is required at the time of booking to secure your slot on the live calendar. Because this is a direct, small-scale service with limited weekly sessions, fees are non-refundable unless I have to cancel the session from my end or if your project falls completely outside my area of expertise.

  • The Credit Loop: If you decide to book a guided day tour or a multi-day transfer with Historic Orkney within 12 months of our consultation, the £60 fee is deducted straight from your final service balance.
  • No Hidden Links: I accept zero commissions, kickbacks, or sponsored perks from local hotels, restaurants, or transport providers. Any recommendation you get is purely based on what is genuinely good on the islands.
