Stepping off the OTA conveyor belt

This is where I launched the Grimleens dark history walking tour of Kirkwall. Another accredited guide tried buying the material off me later, but that content stays in the family for my daughter when the time is right. I used to change the guided tour material by 50% every week to avoid plagiarism, and it worked well. Most folk didn't realise I never actually worked for GetYourGuide and merely advertised there. In comparison to the ten to fifteen percent commission on accommodation provider platforms, a thirty-two percent cut for tour guides is daylight robbery for merely hosting a web page. Platforms are mainly designed for mass-produced bus tours anyway, not an independent local Orkney tour guide running unique Orkney tours and Orkney day trips anywhere across the islands.

Do not throw online travel agencies straight into the peat fire just yet. Use them as a research directory. Find the activity, track down the actual provider by name, Google them independently, and check their reviews elsewhere too is always a great idea. The online tourism market is flooded with marketing outfits selling "semi-private" expeditions of Orkney, which usually translates to shoving eight or more complete strangers into a cramped shuttle van like battery hens. Whether you want a guided tours of Orkney inseln, Multi-Day Orkney tours, or Orkney day trips built entirely around you, look past the flashy wrapper and verify who is actually going to be there on the day.

Check the review history for a revolving door of guide names. If a company rolls out a fresh-faced driver every single day of the week, you are gambling with your holiday, not booking a local expert. A true local Orkney tour guide means the person whose name is on the door is the one actually there on the day, in the beaming sunshine or the freezing horizontal gale, and answering your most interesting questions without frantically checking a laminated card. If the reviews read like a casting call for a minor soap opera, walk away. This is something I cover in detail during my Trip planning consulations.

When you bypass the middleman, your money stays on the ground where it belongs. It goes into maintaining a vehicle that can actually handle our roads rather than rattling your teeth out of your skull. Booking direct secures the best deals and inclusions for you as a buyer too because the guide is not bleeding a third of their margin to an app. You get actual local knowledge instead of a rehearsed script written by a committee three thousand miles away who think "sheeps" are a decorative garden feature.

From over five years of tour operating experience on Orkney I have seen many people worry about booking direct with a supplier because of the big name safety factor of platforms, as if the weather gods personally consult a third-party customer service chatbot before sending a force-nine gale. That is what travel insurance was invented for. But the OTA terms are just as rotten for operators. There is a distinct trend of clients booking three or four different operators just to drop them the day before, just in case one falls through. This forces operators to overbook expecting it, creating a vicious cycle. I have not cancelled a tour in over fifteen months at the time of writing, yet I have been plagued by last-minute cancellations from people playing the system. That kind of chaos only drives up costs for everyone else at the end of the day.

To put it in perspective, out of more than fifty cruise ship guided tours of Orkney in 2026, I had exactly one no-dock cancellation. Ships dock, weather happens, and adults figure it out together without a middleman sending emails to no real benefit to anyone.

Between pirate operators and overseas skimmers, as I call them, it can be extremely difficult to establish if a business is genuine and legal. Ensure whichever provider you find is a member of either the SITOA or STGA as a baseline. Both are nationally recognised and accredited bodies with a code of conduct for suppliers, and having that affiliation even gets us in for free at historic sites which saves you money. Compliance and legal standing are checked by both organisations externally. Licensing in the industry is horrendously complicated at present, but tour guides are simply not required to be licensed as taxis as per Scottish law. Anyone who claims different gives cause to question their "Bona fides".

This clause may well be changing soon as the Scottish government is looking at tour guide specific licensing where executive vehicles are cleared; things like window tints and many premium features disqualify from standard taxi testing protocol and would fail even though they are far superior for client experience. Take five minutes to dig past the slick marketing gloss, check their track record, and book direct.
