Best Time to Visit Orkney for Tours and History Lovers
Orkney is beautiful year-round, but some seasons make it even more magical depending on what you’re looking for. Visitors often ask me: “When’s the best time to book a tour of Orkney?” Here’s my local perspective.

Spring (April–May)
This is one of my favourite times. The days are longer, puffins and seabirds return to the cliffs, and the weather starts to settle. Historic sites like Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar feel quieter, giving you space to enjoy them without the big crowds.
Summer (June–August)
Summer brings the longest days of the year — nearly 20 hours of daylight. It’s festival season in Orkney, and the islands are buzzing. This is peak season, so expect more visitors, but it’s also when wildlife is at its best. Perfect for combining a historic Orkney tour with a bit of island life.
Autumn (September–October)
Crowds thin out and the light gets softer, making the landscapes glow. It’s my go-to season for photography tours and more personal experiences at historic sites. The weather is changeable, but the atmosphere is unbeatable.
Winter (November–March)
Fewer visitors, but plenty of magic. Maeshowe’s solstice alignment happens in December, and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime sight. If you don’t mind the wind and rain, winter offers raw, authentic Orkney — history, culture, and dramatic coastlines without the crowds.
So, when is the best time to visit Orkney? The truth is, it depends on you. Whether you want endless daylight, quiet ancient sites, or winter drama, I can build a private Orkney tour to suit your season.
